The BYU Wind Symphony proudly announces the release of Latin Dances, the ensemble’s first album under the direction of Shawn Smith. This vibrant collection features eight tracks that explore a variety of dance styles from across Latin America, with music from Cuba, Argentina, and Brazil. Listeners will experience the region’s rich cultural rhythms and melodies throughout the album.
A standout feature is the debut of three original compositions from Brazil, presented for the first time in the United States. These pieces, widely popular among Brazilian bands, bring a distinctive flair to the collection. Over the past 15 years, Director Shawn Smith has conducted extensively in Central and South America, cultivating a deep love and appreciation for Latin music—one he now shares through this project.
With Latin Dances, the BYU Wind Symphony not only highlights its remarkable talent but also aims to foster greater appreciation for Latin music. Reflecting on the release, Shawn Smith said, “I could not be more proud of the superb playing by the Wind Symphony.
