American Folk Dance Ensemble creates a colorful tapestry of the finest traditional music, costuming, and choreography to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the United States. Each performance is a cultural expression, strongly associated with a specific group or people as a reflection of American custom and belief. Their fast-paced, superbly staged program includes Appalachian clogging, Southern waltzes, New England Contra, square dancing, hambone, and much more.

The group is accompanied by the BYU Mountain Strings band. Compromised of seven talented instrumentalists, who perform with a variety of traditional folk instruments, American Folk Dance Ensemble not only brings the history of the U.S. to the stage through dance but also through music.

“The dancers and the musicians were absolutely magnificent. Everyone in my office who was lucky enough to attend the performance has been talking today about the energy, enthusiasm, and sheer talent that was on stage last night. The overwhelming feeling here is that it’s extremely unfortunate that there could only be one performance!”

“While there were no guns or bonfires, you did help us to take the celebration not just from one end of the continent to the other but from America to Estonia—from one end of the world to the other.”
